From the Juror: Emily Belz

I always feel honored when asked to look at the work of other artists and select, what I hope, is an exhibition of images that speaks on both an individual and collective level. In making my selections for RICPA’s 6th Annual Juried Member Exhibition, I first considered each piece on it’s own, and then how I could bring the works together to fill the gallery with connections and conversations—some perhaps more evident, others perhaps taking a longer look to parse out and appreciate. It’s pure joy for me to thread together and curate associations among images by different makers, on different themes, and using different techniques. The range among the works submitted was impressive, and the decisions, both considered and difficult. Please take a look, and as I often say to my students, “follow along with me and see what you discover.” Thank you to all the artists who submitted work for this call, and to David DeMelim for inviting me to be a part of the RICPA community.
