As summer winds down, we are headed Back to School with an exhibition to highlight Mentorship and Workshops at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts
Back to School: Work from the Workshop(s)
Opens on September 19th to feature work from the workshops and mentorship programs here at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts.
The exhibition features selections of work that came out of various workshops and mentorship programs run here in Providence, and pairs work developed in class with selections from completed projects and subsequent work produced after the workshop experience ended. With this exhibition are launching a new series of workshops and offering a new opportunity to sign up for a one of our favorites.
Workshops:
Dr. Chazan & the Networks Project (Pictured above)
The Networks project, underwritten by Dr. Chazan to promote Rhode Island artists was in many ways the starting point for the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts.
Dr. Chazan was an avid collector and chose to build his collection by supporting Rhode Island based artists. The NetWorks project was a long term project launched in 2008 as a print catalog, with video interviews on CD and an annual exhibition. These annual showcases were produced through 2016 and I was fortunate enough to be one of the Artists featured in what turned out to be the last print edition of the project.
Sadly, Dr. Chazan passed away in mid-July shortly after the opening of NetWorks Rhode Island & the Chazan Collection at the WaterFire Arts Center https://waterfire.org/events/networks-rhode-island-and-the-chazan-collection-a-half-century-of-ri-artistic-patronage/ (On view to the public through September 1st.) This unique exhibition is not a retrospective, nor work from the collection, but rather another ongoing effort to support the artists who’s work he collected. This exhibition brought all the artists in the collection back together to present new work and is to be followed by an exhibition where the NetWorks Artists each invite new Rhode Island Artists to feature. The photographers in the collection were featured iat the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts in 2020 and can be found on our website at https://www.riphotocenter.org/networks-rhode-island-photography-exhibition-2020/ Dr. Chazan’s involvement in the arts will be missed and I will continue to inspired by his generosity and community building efforts.
The gallery is open Wednesdays – Saturdays, Noon – 6:00pm or by appointment

America Today:
A Snapshot of Our Time
Building on an idea laid down by Edward Steichen in The Family of Man exhibition, expanded on by Robert Frank in The Americans and with a small nod to 24hrs in Cyberspace, by Rick Smolan we are looking to take America’s portrait in 2024.
This is a call for entries to capture, in photographs, [the United States of] America today. We are looking for pictures of your community, your friends, your neighborhood, local events, landmarks and just everyday activities that represent life in America today. We are looking for entries from all 50 states and 14 Territories that comprise the United States of America for a gallery exhibition and larger companion book to document the unique times we live in as we take a Snapshot of the United States today.
From Main Street to your Back Yard, from the everyday activities to the grand celebrations and the tragedies that touch us all, we want to see what your America looks like. What image defines present day America for you? What best represents the city or town you live in? What gives you the strength to get up in the morning? What keeps you up at night? These are some of the ideas we are looking for as we put together this time capsule of United States of America in the 2024.
Join us in creating this 21st Century Portrait of the United States of America.
This is a call for Street Photography, images Straight Out of Camera and all photographs that capture your real world experience.

5th Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition
On view through September 13th this spotlight on our Members was juried by Frances Jakubek
Join us in exploring work by members: Lee Cott, Laurie Peek, Reed Pike, Keith Prue, Matt Temple, Sean Sullivan and Martha Wakefield
Listen to Frances discuss work entered and some of the thought process behind selecting work for our 5th Annual Spotlight Exhibition (coming soon)
One of three annual member exhibitions, this Spotlight series was conceived as a way to present ideas that carry across a group of images and to shine a light on our members. This juried exhibition provides the selected members the opportunity to present a larger selection of images than a typical juried show. As a viewer I hope you enjoy this expanded look at the members featured and the different ways they assembled a selection of images to present an idea beyond a single frame.
