October 2022, Summer is fast fading into the rearview mirror as autumn arrives…
While the leaves haven’t started to change color in any meaningful way locally, the long overdue arrival of rain is sure to make a short foliage season. If you had a thoughts of capturing the changing seasons this is a friendly reminder that time is short…
Membership at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts comes with many benefits, among them is our annual Juried Member exhibition which will close out the 2022 exhibition cycle. Entry is open for our Fourth Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition and is free for Exhibiting Members and above, with entry via email. There is no theme or prompt for this exhibition and current members are encouraged to submit up to five images to be juried individually. The exhibition, juried by Kristin Street, will open on December 15th… as both our year end and holiday program. Work on exhibit will be available to take home at the time of purchase. We are looking forward to featuring the work of our members as we close out another successful year.
Among the other member benefits is our monthly Print Share & Peer Review series. The next session is scheduled for October 12th, bring some prints to share and feel free to bring a friend or two…
As we ramp up in person programing we are running a two day workshop at WaterFire with David H. Wells. This November 5th WaterFire is their annual salute to veterans and provides a handy location to put the day’s lessons into practice. In addition, we are excited to be restarting our most popular workshop series… with a focus on project development & strategies for success, this hybrid workshop will be presented via Zoom with additional prerecorded content to be explored between sessions. This primer on project development, storytelling and photo essays starts October 19th and runs through January on Zoom. Entry has closed for both “Under Sail” and “Black, White and all the Grays in Between” calls for entries and notifications have been emailed. The names of photographers with work included have been added to the respective Call webpages. If you entered, check your email or your CaFE account for information on which images were selected. Accepted work for Under Sail is due in the gallery October 15th. Accepted work for Black, White and All the Grays Between is due in the gallery November 12th.

Orchis: An Orchid Inspires a Ballet
Watch a dead flower grow into a live ballet in this solo exhibition of work by Photographer and Keeper of Light, A. Cemal Ekin. The Exhibition brings together the original Orchid photographs with photographs and costume pieces from the ballet they inspired and includes video clips from the live ballet.
Workshop – Starting October 19th
Storytelling, Photo Essays and the Personal Project 2022 with David H. Wells
Our most popular workshop series… with a focus on project development & strategies for success, will be starting on October 19th. This hybrid workshop will be presented via Zoom with additional prerecorded content assigned to be explored independently between sessions. This primer on project development and visual storytelling leverages the power of the group, both in developing your own work and to learn how to critique work presented, in a positive and supportive environment. The schedule provides ample time to complete assignments and develop between the monthly sessions and run through January on Zoom.

Under Sail: Experiences, People, and Destinations
This exhibition juried by Paul M Murray and Daniel Forster provides a look at sailing around the state and around the world. Entry for this exhibition ran all summer long as a way to celebrate sailing, life on the water with the hope to motivate you to step way from your computer and spend some time outdoors… if you didn’t, there are still a lot of fall left to enjoy.

Black, White, and all the Grays Between
An exhibition juried by Eric Kunsman to explore photography with a limited color pallet. This exhibition brings together a variety of image from around the country and around the world to look at the world in Black & White or in anything but full color. Print of the Month Club –
Steeple St: Our October print from our Print a Month Club.
This ongoing program was introduced as a way to support the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts and grow your collection at the same time. The program makes a new collector’s print available each month, produced in a very limited edition of 18. These numbered prints are available for purchase individually or the complete set of 12 prints can be pre-purchased. A new print becomes available each month, for more details or to order or reserve yours today.
Print Share:
We will be hosting an in person Print Share & Peer Review session in the gallery on October 12th…
These peer review sessions are open to anyone fully vaccinated, to share and comment on work with fellow members and enthusiasts. Bring your prints to this monthly event which is scheduled for the Second Wednesday of each month and starts at 6:30pm. Check the events section on our website for more information and updates.
Individual Portfolio/Project Reviews:
Individual feedback opportunities are available on an ongoing basis in four different formats for 2022. These review sessions can be used to preview new work, share ideas and explore future directions or projects in development. Appointments can be scheduled online for Zoom or in person sessions at www.riphotocenter.org/portfolio-reviews-and-consultations
Registration is open for our annual 20 minute individual Member review sessions.
We are also offering 45 minute one on one sessions open to the public via zoom or in person at the Gallery
New for 2022 we will also be offering “Lunch with the Director” for those interested in a more immersive conversations about your work and your goals. Lunch is included with these two hour more casual sessions. Questions can be directed to gallery@riphotocenter.org
