May 2024…
While our look at the lasting influence of George DeWolfe continues, May 16th will bring our next exhibition to look at “Alternate Process” photography. For 2024 we are looking to the future, not the past and presenting a pair of exhibitions to look at images created, not captured. Beyond the Photograph, our first exhibition to explore Artificial Intelligence applied to image making, will be presented alongside a solo exhibition featuring Jim Bremer’s fancifully hand crafted photo illustrations in Guardians of Arcadia. Collectively these exhibitions explore the state of the art in digital image creation and provide a look at alternate ways to construct a photographic image, or at least an image that appears photographic. We are presenting this work, both to raise awareness of emerging processes and to provide a platform for early adopters and those artists exploring the leading edge to share their work.
Looking ahead, we have a number of exciting exhibition opportunities an exhibitions in the works, including:
Entry for our 5th Annual Spotlight Member exhibition is open for members at all levels Details and entry requirements are available online, entry for this unique member exhibition requires five related images that will be juried and hung as a set or series. This year we are pleased to have Frances Jakubek as juror for this annual member exhibition.
The Vanta Guild: Family Business, opening June 20th as curated by Jonathan Pitts-Wiley from works by Vanta Guild members. The Vanta Guild is a collective of active, Rhode Island-based Black photographers who unapologetically celebrate and depict the experiences and imaginations of descendants of the African diaspora.
The curators are coming to the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts for a very special exhibition… of their own work. Six curators, all photographers, will be coming together to exhibit new work in Cu.ra.tor: an artist, partially hidden at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts in July. A unique chance to see new work from the photographers behind some of the area’s leading exhibition spaces will open on July 18th.
Karen Haas and the Lane collection… our 10th International Call was juried by Karen Haas who gave an insightful talk about her role at the MFA in Boston, the Lane Collection and current trends and projects If you missed it, the talk was recorded and is available on our website. I am very grateful for the time and effort Karen put in, both as juror and in preparing this talk.

George De Wolfe & Friends…
Lasting Landscapes – Lasting Influences

This exhibition is the second in a series to provide an updated look at Landscape Photography in the 21st Century. This years exhibition presents a lose collection of photographers whose work is influenced by the teachings of, or their association with George De Wolf. George was a passionate teacher, and advocated a contemplative approach to making photographs that has been applied well beyond his focus on the landscape. The exhibition includes a selection of George’s work, who passed away in July 2023, presented alongside the work of the members of FOG.
FOG (Friends of George) is: Ann Beard*, Robert Belleville, Lydia Goetze, Lynn Harrison, Bob Hartung, Jodie Hulden, David Pinkham, John Simmons
On View Through: May 10th, 2024

Join Us Juneteenth for a soft opening of Family Business with the Vanta Guild –
(Gallery Night Opening Reception, June 20th)
The Vanta Guild: Family Business
This exhibition is being curated by Jonathan Pitts-Wiley from works by Vanta Guild members. The Vanta Guild is a collective of active, Rhode Island-based Black photographers who unapologetically celebrate and depict the experiences and imaginations of descendents of the African diaspora. In commemoration of the Juneteenth holiday and the critical need to celebrate, educate, and agitate for a better future, Family Business seeks to explore the vital importance of given and chosen familial ties. Through images that challenge the monolithic Black struggle narrative that has been baked into the American conscience, this exhibition demonstrates the myriad ways family remains critical to the survival of Black people in America and beyond.
The Curators are coming in July – Opening July 18th
Cu.ra.tor: an artist, partially hidden
For this unique curated exhibition we will be filling the gallery with the work from a selection of local curators who are also photographers. The exhibition will feature new work from; Jessica Burko, Emily Belz, David DeMelim, Erin Carey, Frances Jakubek & Francine Weiss to present and explore the work of these artists who spend most of their time working to promote the work of others
Some of our featured artist/curators have juried or curated exhibitions at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts and the rest are on the short list for upcoming exhibitions here in Providence.
