
Spring Updates and Upcoming Activities
As we head into Spring things are heating up at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts and months of planning has produced a number of exciting Exhibitions, Workshops and a unique Call for Entries with Michael Itkoff from Daylight Books. Also in the works Membership Renewals and our Community and Juried Member’s shows.
Our 6th International open call (pictured) is on view through March 15th

As part of the local celebration of Women’s History month we decided to make some history of our own by hosting Outspoken: Expanded, an exhibition featuring nine women photographers currently making history. The exhibition, curated by Marky Kauffmann features current work by award winning photographers Nadine Broughton, Blake Fitch, Nancy Grace Horton, Marky Kauffmann, Tira Kahn, Susan Lapides, Sunjoo Lee, Raina Matar and Emily Schiffer.

As part of our Outspoken: Expanded exhibition featuring current work by nine award winning women photographers, Annu Palakunnathu Matthew will moderate a discussion with curator by Marky Kauffmann and photographers Tira Kahn, Susan Lapides and Emily Schiffer.

Two exhibitions presenting work that explores photography beyond capture through widely different approach and processes.
Polaroid Possibilities: The Art and Photography of John Reuter presents a selection of John’s not very instant photography shot with SX-70s, Polacolor Image Transfers and the Polaroid 20×24 Camera. John is the Director of the 20×24 Studio and an adjunct professor of photography at the Hartford Art School.

Dare alle Luce: Ralph Mercer presents a selection of work from Mercer’s Black & White series “Dialectics”, a comparison of the organic human figure with hard edged geometric abstractions. Opening May 16th – Kev Filmore: 21 Magnolia Rd. & The 2nd Annual Community Show
Kev Filmore will be exhibiting as our invited guest photographer in the Focus Gallery. Kev will be exhibiting her handmade book and work from 21 Magnolia Rd. in a solo presentation. Filmore’s work explores the healing power of art inside a very personal family narrative that unfolded around her at 21 Magnolia Road.

The Second Annual Holiday Members Show & Print Share will be in the Community Gallery, this exhibition is open to members at every level. Two entries each, photography in any style, process or subject. Deadline: 5/11/19

June: Photo Stories
A Call for Entry for portfolios and work in series. Entries will be juried as a set, not individually as in our previous calls. This is your chance to exhibit work that extends across a set of images, to tell a story or explore an idea. We are looking for your story in photographs.

On the Street with David H. Wells
Explore techniques to capture engaging photographs on the go in this two day workshop. David will guide you through the strategies, subject matter, location scouting, and shooting on the street of the performers and spectators at PVDFest in downtown Providence Rhode Island. Complete with review session and crit.

The Next Step:
Western Masters, Eastern Insights
A two day workshop with Eileen McCarney Muldoon & Olaf Willoughby Eileen & Olaf present the Japanese artistic philosophy of Shu Ha Ri. They show how to use this approach to expand your visual signature through looking closely at some of the masters. Since the workshop is in Providence we’ll explore the work of those who rose to fame through shooting in cities, e.g. Saul Leiter, Aaron Siskind (and others) to showcase widely differing styles emanating from similar start points. Workshop includes time to explore Providence and put into practice the ideas presented.
Eileen is a well known and widely exhibited fine art photographer in New England. Together with Olaf she co-teaches regularly at Maine Media Workshops and at Leica Studios in London and New York as well as exhibiting in these locations.

Portfolio Development & Intro to Publication with Michael Itkoff
Creating a strong portfolio is a must for any aspiring professional photographer to showcase their best and most up-to-date work. In this workshop organized around one intensive full day session, each student’s photographs are workshopped and critiqued. Emphasis is placed on the form/content relationship within each image as well as the techniques required to create the strongest possible sequence. Over the course of the weekend, each student takes
Michael has been deeply involved in the publishing industry in both print and digital media and worked at Rizzoli International Publications. Michael Itkoff is an artist and Cofounder of both Fabl and Daylight Books a non-profit organization dedicated to publishing art and photography books. Michael will be the Juror for our Photo Stories open call in June 2019.
