Update from the Director…
February 2022… The Director’s Choice Exhibition continues through February 11th and presents a selection of my own, often experimental photography. All proceeds from the sale of this work goes to covering operating costs… The exhibition is presented alongside a solo exhibition of work from Member James Hunt from his Draper Factory Demolition project.
Entry for our 8th Annual International Call for Contemporary Photography closes on February 18th. After a two year pause, the exhibition will be juried by Jessica Roscio, Director and Curator of the Danforth Art Museum at Framingham State University and presented online and live in our galleries in late April.
While we wait for the International Call to come together we are excited to be presenting two curated exhibitions. The first, Stitches in Time, curated by Emily Belz will open on February 17th and presents the work of five women artists exploring domestic stereotypes (during a pandemic). The exhibition is presented as a part of our annual Behind the Lens: Women in Photography series. The second, opening on March 17th will be Making Pictures with Plants: Contemporary Anthotypes, curated by Jesseca Ferguson and Mary Kocol. The exhibition brings together work from practitioners around the world of this early photographic process that uses plant material as a light sensitive dye. The exhibition presents the work of sixteen current practitioners of this vintage process to take on contemporary topics.
New for 2022, as part of our Member activities we are offering individual feedback sessions with the Director. This is a chance to preview new work, share ideas, explore future directions or projects in development. Sessions can also be used to present exhibition ready work. Opportunities for individual portfolio/project reviews are available via Zoom or live in the gallery. A solo exhibition in the Focus Gallery of work from Member James Hunt. James will be presenting a selection of black & white photographs of the demolition of the Draper complex.
The Director’s Choice: David DeMelim
The proceeds from the sale of all works in this year’s exhibition will go to cover operating costs. The exhibition presents a selection of photography and printmaking from our Managing Director, David DeMelim. This exhibition is presented alongside work from the RICPA collection.
Next in the Gallery – Stitches in Time
Curated by Emily Belz: Stitches in Time will be presented as part of our annual Behind the Lens series to explore domestic and family driven narratives from five women photographers. The collected work asks us to reexamine the fabric of our society, the ties that bind and the “stitches” that hold us together. The exhibition brings together a selection of work from Becky Behar, Coco McCabe, Michelle Petersen, Gail Samuelson, and Erin Sweeney to explore gender stereotypes, time management and domestic narratives through a 21st Century lens. Opening February 17th.
Coming in March – Making Pictures from Plants: Contemporary Anthotypes
As part of our ongoing exploration of alternate processes we will be presenting, Making Pictures from Plants: Contemporary Anthotypes, curated by Jesseca Ferguson and Mary Kocol. Invented in 1842 by Mary Somerville, anthotypes are images created using photosensitive material from plants. Exposures for this contact printing process run from hours to days in direct sunlight as the area not covered by the material is bleached out by the sun rays to form an image. The exhibition will feature sixteen current practitioners from around the world to look at contemporary practice.
Print Share:
There will not be an in person Print Share & Peer Review session in February or March. These in person opportunities will return in April as COVID restrictions allow. These peer review sessions are open to anyone fully vaccinated, to share and comment on work with fellow members and enthusiasts. Bring your prints to this monthly event which is scheduled for the Second Wednesday of each month and starts at 6:30pm. Check the events section on our website for more information and updates.
