Once again The Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts is starting off the new year with the Director’s Choice Exhibition. This year we are looking back to move forward. The exhibition is presented as an opportunity to take a look at where we have been, to help define future directions. The Director’s Choice exhibition presents a selection of work from, Rites of Memory, a solo exhibition, by our Managing Director, David DeMelim that spent much of 2024 traveling around Cuba. The work is paired with both, award winning work, and outtakes from projects waiting to make their primetime appearances. Selected work includes work that came before Rites of Memory and some that came after. David shares that,
“Previous work stretches back decades, while newer work includes work shot on the trip to Cuba in 2024, as well as work only weeks old, but based on an idea I had at least thirty years ago. Sometimes it just takes time… The included work presents a mix of Digital Printmaking, Experimental Photography and a few images that slipped out of the camera largely un-edited. That said, be forewarned, most of the cameras used have been modified to record non-standard files…”

Our tradition at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts to start the year off with a director’s choice exhibition continues. In the past I have used the exhibition to feature work from the jurors and curators we work with, or to present ideas and photographers that did not fit into our regular schedule, and the series has proved a popular way to start the year. This presentation for 2025, provided me a chance to review past directions, and to preview new work as we begin a new year.
Exhibition presents: A selection of both new and old experiments in photography and printmaking by our managing director, David DeMelim.
