In the Minds Eye: Built Photographs by David DeMelim
As summer winds down Mid-August brings us to the Director’s Choice, an exhibition with a focus on presenting new ideas and ways to make and present photographs. This exhibition presents new work and experiments in digital imaging from our Managing Director. A background in print production and computer generated imagery overlap with his early interest in technology to drive this body of work. Born fifty years earlier there is no doubt he would have been a painter.
In the Minds Eye, is being presented in tandem with The Proximity of Mortality, a Book by Stephen Starkman

Artist Statement:
“My interest is in exploring how we see and experience the world with a focus on how human vision differs from machine vision… As AI plays an ever increasing role in our daily lives it becomes more important to focus on how human vision differs from what a camera captures. My interest is not in recording what something looks like, but capturing what it felt like, or what the experience inspired.
There is a difference in how the camera records a moment in time, separate from the lived experience. The camera is like the human eye, a mechanism to capture light, but we don’t really see with our eyes… it is our brian that takes and processes a continuous stream of images and assembles them in realtime. Often the assembled images present an optimized view that can’t be captured with a camera.
The work on display makes visible this internal process, as our lived experience is recorded and makes visible memories.”
