Black, White & All the Grays Between…
In society today, we are constantly presented with life as a series of black or white choices. Sadly life is rarely so simple and as photographers or lens based artists it is hard to ignore all the shades of gray in-between that help to tell the whole story. Whether Black & White or Monochromatic, this exhibition explores how this reduction of color can enhance an image, create harmony out of chaos or tell a story more powerfully. Eric Kunsman, the juror for this exhibition looked at how entrants approached their subject and utilized a monochromatic tonal scale to help with the intended impact, composition, and personalized style. While the ability to control technique is essential, in the end, the individual’s vision is more important than the process.
This juried exhibition opened November 17th and presents work from:

Juror’s Statement:
Jurying this exhibition was a serious challenge because I could have included 250 photographs that were the same caliber as what is hanging on the wall. You all answered the call and submitted black, white, and an astonishing number of grays in between. Therefore, as I narrowed the work down, it became essential for all aspects of the photographs to work, including technical, originality, personal connection to the images, and the conceptual elements for those that submitted a series. Once I had the selection narrowed down to 150 pieces, I then looked at which photographs worked together cohesively to provide the viewers with a statement on contemporary photography in 2022. My job as the juror is to provide the exhibition viewers with photographs that ask the tough questions each photographer intended while ensuring that neighboring images do not cancel those questions.
A number of photographers had many pieces I would have liked to include because their submissions created a meaningful dialog, but I chose to try and include as many photographers as possible. However, I have based my awards not on a single piece but on which photographers had the most remaining images after the first two rounds of jurying. If you have time, I suggest visiting the website of the photographers who won the awards to view a more extensive selection of their photography.
