About the Work:
Collective Cadence: Assembles the stories and fragments of memory to create a lasting visualization of the collective experience of service and deployment. Alicia’s work reflects “a community of veterans bound by the stories that shape the fabric of our experience… And, the idea that as soldiers, we were part of something much bigger than ourselves.”
Through the telling of each
We are united as one.
In the telling of the collective,
We find our own.
These are our stories.
This is our story.
A veteran U.S. Army commander, and Black Hawk pilot, Dietz’s work has been exhibited widely both nationally and internationally. Alicia maintains an active workshop schedule sharing her talents with others and is available for public, commercial and private commissions. Her recent commissions have included the design and creation of award boxes for the Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ Startup Challenge in Vatican City, the theme-based interior design and implementation of two Virginia restaurants, and multiple private and veteran-related projects
About: Alicia Dietz
Dietz recently traded a pilot helmet for hand plane, following her passion for craft after a ten-year career as an officer and Blackhawk Helicopter Maintenance Test Pilot in the U.S. Army. She served in Iraq and had been stationed all over the world, including Germany, Alaska, and Egypt. While seemingly two different areas of expertise, her career in the Army unexpectedly prepared her to design and build. The discipline necessary to command soldiers and to test broken helicopters has translated into an astute attention to detail and an unwavering work ethic.
“I have accumulated many sources of inspiration from my years traveling and meeting a variety of people across the globe. As a woman, a soldier, and a dreamer, I have many experiences to draw from, and I use those experiences to fuel my pieces. I employ a variety of media and techniques to include image transfers, encaustics, and glass to enhance my furniture pieces. Always looking for a new experiment, I find the journey of the creative process its own reward.” – Alicia Dietz
Alicia lives and has a studio in Richmond, Virginia. She earned an MFA in Furniture Design and Woodworking from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2016, a BS in Journalism and Advertising Management from Ohio University in 2001, and two Woodworking and Furniture Certificates from Vermont Woodworking School in 2012 and 2013. She has participated in many continuing education efforts at several organizations including Penland School of Crafts (NC), Anderson Ranch Arts Center (CO), Corning Glass Studio (NY), Haystack Mountain School (ME), Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts (TN) and the Visual Arts Center (VA).
