Update from the Director…
May 2022, Sailing Into Summer…
Summer is just around the corner, longer days, warmer weather and the chance to enjoy the great outdoors are some of the things we are looking forward to. A little fun in the sun, beaches, and a host of outdoor events await and sailing… did I mention sailing? For many, sailing and being on the water is synonymous with Summer, and in Rhode Island, known as The Ocean State, (with 400 miles of coastline in an area only 37 miles wide and 48 miles long) there is a long and celebrated maritime legacy. Once the home of the America’s Cup, a strong boat building tradition and pictured above, the First Baptist Church in America, established in 1638. While its connection to sailing is not obvious, this current building was built in 1774 by out of work shipbuilders (out of work due to the British closing the boat yards and ports in Boston as punishment for a Tea Party gone slightly wrong. The Tea Party came six months after the Burning of the Gaspee, a British Warship sunk in Rhode Island, which should have been remembered as the beginning of the American Revolution but for the lack of a competent PR team, a problem that still plagues the state.
Surrounded by all this history and motivated by a desire to bring more of our programing outdoors, May will bring the first of a series of exhibitions and programs we will be hosting throughout the Summer focused on the leisure and sporting activities both off our shores and around the world. To start off, we will be presenting Riding the Wind by Paul M. Murray which explores Rhode Island’s sailing heritage with a focus on the 12-metre yachts, formerly America’s Cup contenders. In tandem with Riding the Wind, we are presenting Voyages and Victories an invitational exhibition featuring a selection of publication and award-winning photographs by Daniel Forster and Rob Migliaccio to present their take on sailing at both the collegiate level and the international stage.
I encourage all of you to take advantage of every opportunity to get outdoors and bring your camera! We will be hosting a Call for Entries for an exhibition in September with a focus on the great outdoors, life on the water and… did I mention sailing?… more on that next month.

Riding the Wind & Voyages and Victories:
Three Rhode Island photographers explore competitive sailing, three levels of competition, three visions
In a special member solo presentation, we are hosting Paul Murray’s Riding the Wind which explores Rhode Island’s sailing heritage with a focus on the 12-metre yachts, formerly America’s Cup contenders, and still actively Riding the Wind for leisure and competition. Previous versions of this exhibition have traveled widely across Cuba as part of a cultural mission in that island nation. Paul’s award-winning travel, nature, marine and aviation photography has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States as well as in Cuba, Greece, Hungary, and Spain.
In tandem with Riding the Wind, we have invited Daniel Forster and Rob Migliaccio to look at sailing on the collegiate level and the international stage featuring a selection of publication and award-winning photographs in Voyages and Victories. For decades, Daniel has created captivating images of world-class sailing events and competitions including the Olympics for clients and publications worldwide. An advocate for community and collegiate sailing, Rob portrays the action, spirit, and emotion of parts of the sailing community that offer competition and accessibility to many.
