December 2024…
As we get ready to close out another year…
Traffic through the gallery continues to increase, membership is up and our current exhibitions, in the galleries through December 13th are among our most popular. While we have one more Open Print Share & Peer Review scheduled for December 11th, and one more exhibition to host, with an opening reception on December 19th, before the year ends, I am happy to be ending this challenging year on an up beat. Details and links to events are included below, and also available on our website at riphotoarts.org
Before 2024 ends, I would like to take a moment to thank the juror’s, curators, guest artists and members we have had the pleasure to work with this year. I owe a debt of gratitude to each of them, for their efforts in making 2024 an interesting and successful year. Without their contributions, and work to present, our programing wouldn’t be nearly as meaningful or engaging. I would also like to thank Elin Spring and Suzanne Révy for including our exhibitions in their monthly listings of the best regional, in person photography exhibitions. If you are not familiar with their efforts you should take a look at www.whatwillyouremember.com or follow on Instagram @whatwillyouremember Always a good read and for our followers in the Boston area, while we are listed under the Road Trip section, the T actually runs into Providence and is less then a four minute walk from the gallery. For our members and followers further afield, What Will You Remember provides a constantly updated review of current photographic practice, and is worth reading even if seeing the exhibitions in person is not an option.
As 2025 approaches, we will be announcing a number of new and expanded programs in the coming weeks and will be starting the new year off with The Director’s Choice exhibition, and following with the next installment of our always popular “Behind the Lens” series. New for 2025, we have invited the 2020 cohort back for a followup exhibition. When I originally invited these early career artists, back in 2020, my intention was to invite them back five or ten years down the road to see how their work had developed and evolved. What was not part of the original plan, was the arrival of COVID-19 which prevented Behind the Lens 2020 from ever opening to the public. Fortunately for me, the exhibition had been installed, and filled more than a few empty days, as travel and in person events were suspended. While they can claim the distinction of being part of the longest running exhibition in our history, five years later it is time to give these photographers the in person public showing they were promised in 2020.

5th Annual Community Member Exhibition is being presented in tandem with Bring Me a Dream, by Hannah Latham.

Pickup of unsold work: December 14th
Hannah’s solo exhibition features an expanded look at work first presented in our 5th Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition in 2023. Our juror, Emily Belz, awarded Hannah the prize of a solo exhibition, to further develop the project, and this the resulting exhibition. Hannah’s exploration is intensely personal and yet universal at the same time. She looks at family, presenting life and loss from a multi generational perspective, to reflect on her Grandparents, with an eye toward the echoes and the emptiness that remains.
