Update from the Director…
August 2022, Summer heats up and big things are happening…
With a little juggling of our exhibition schedule and a lot of effort on the part of Member Paul M Murray, I am excited to announce that we will be featuring the work of two Cuban photographers in a pair of exhibitions opening on August 18th. The exhibitions come to us straight out of Cuba to provide a look at Cuba through the eyes of Cuban photographers.
The first exhibition, Cuba in Parallel has been traveling around Cuba since 2021 and recently opened in Havana, the exhibition pairs the work of Cuban, Adrián Juan Espinosa with the work of local member Paul M Murray. This exhibition is curated by Juan Carlos Mejías with an eye toward our shared humanity. The second exhibition, Cuban Overture: The Other Side of the Mirror features the work of young Cuban photographer, Daniel Martínez. The work in this exhibition, co-curated by Cuban arts advocate and author, Juan Carlos Mejías and Member Paul M Murray presents an introduction, or overture to Cuba, not the tourists view we are so accustomed to, but Cuba through the lens of a Cuban Photographer.
Our Under Sail: Experiences, People, and Destinations Call for Entries has been extended for a few more weeks and the exhibition moved to October. In addition to allowing more of the local sailing events as possible subject matter, this schedule change allowed us the opportunity to present a unique view of Cuba outlined above.
Our Third Annual Members’ Spotlight Exhibition continues through August 12th… It is a great showcase of a selection of our members and features the work of Terry Frishman, Pierre Hauser, Lawrence Manning, Rustam Tahir, Cindy Weisbart, and Cindy Wilson. The exhibition presents a series of five related images from each photographer to provide a more in-depth look at each member’s work and point of view. The Juror’s presentation, presented via Zoom will be available shortly, we will email the link to participants or you can check the exhibition webpage.
While we are talking about Member Exhibitions… We have made some adjustments to the schedule for our upcoming Member Exhibitions. The Juried Member exhibition has been moved back to December and our Community Exhibition which normally ends the year has been scheduled for January and will be the start to a new and exciting year… these schedule changes were made to allow us to bring in our special feature presentation on Cuba.
Entry for our Juried Member Exhibition will follow the same format as our recent Spotlight Exhibition and the entry page will be available in September. Submitted works will be juried individually in this open (un-themed) member exhibition. The exhibition will open on December 15th. Accepted work will be due in the Gallery by December 10th.
Our Annual Community Member Exhibition will start the new year and launch a new series of in person member events. This un-juried member exhibition is open to all members with work available off the wall (sold work will be available to take home at time of purchase). Entry details will be published on our website and follow the new format used for the Spotlight exhibition. Look for more details in my September update.
Print Share & Peer Review will return in September. We are also in the planing stages for series of outdoor Community Events & Photo Walks. Thanks to everyone who joined us on our excursions to Newport in leu of the July Print Share. The ferry ride made for an enjoyable passage down the bay with ample time to explore Newport and hop the ferry for the ride back to Providence. We are planning a few more for late August and early September.
The gallery is open Thursdays – Saturdays Noon – 6:00pm or by appointment
Currently in the Gallery: through August 12th
3rd Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition

Entry has closed for this unique member opportunity and we expect to be posting the juror’s selections in a few weeks.
Next in the Galleries – Opening August 18th
Cuban Overture: The Other Side of the Mirror with Daniel Martínez
Cuba in Parallel with Adrián Juan Espinosa & Paul M Murray
This pair of exhibitions comes to us direct from Cuba to provide an alternate look at Cuba through the work of Cuban photographers, Adrián Juan Espinosa and Daniel Martínez balanced against the work of American, Paul M Murray. Collectively the work presents a deeper and some what haunting look at Cuba today. Gone are the cars, the cigars and the period actors, replaced by friends, family and the dreams and ambitions of the Cubans themselves.
World Anthotype Day: August 20th
Join in with artists around the world…
Anthotype is a green and sustainable photographic process that dates back to Victorian England and the birth of photography. Mostly abandoned for faster and more easily controlled processes, anthotype images are created using photosensitive material from plants. World Anthotype Day is August 20th organized by Malin Fabbri through AlternativePhotography.com Most everything you need to know (and possibly more than you want to know) is available on our resource page at www.riphotocenter.org/anthotype
Unlike many other photographic processes, Anthotypes involve a large amount of trial & error are not generally something that can be made in a single day. Exposure times vary widely based on the strength of the sun and the plant material used, with exposures ranging from hours to days. So if you think you might be interested, start early and practice.
Coming in September – Opening Sept 15th
Orchis: An Orchid inspires a ballet, a solo presentation by A. Cemal Ekin
Watch a dead flower grow into a live ballet in this solo exhibition of work by Photographer and Keeper of Light, A. Cemal Ekin.
