Update from the Director…
August 2021… Summer is in full swing and our Spotlight Members’ exhibition continues in the galleries through August 13th. The exhibition presents a diverse selection of projects from eight of our members and I encourage you to stop in to see the exhibition in person… it is also available online
I am looking forward to resuming our in person Print Share & Peer Review sessions starting on August 11th. This opportunity is open to anyone fully vaccinated, to share and comment on work with fellow members and enthusiasts. Bring your prints to this monthly event which is scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month and starts at 6:30pm. Check the events section on our website for more information and updates. Additionally we are accepting registrations for two workshops in September… see links below, and will be opening our next exhibition, A Fall of Rain with juror Kat Kiernan on August 19th.
The Bigger News is I am excited to have Jan Howard, Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the RISD Museum as the juror for an exhibition to explore what Community means to you. This call for entries is open to members and non-members alike for an exhibition in mid September... Time is running out… FINAL ENTRY DEADLINE: AUGUST 14th.
The gallery is open Thursdays – Saturdays Noon – 6:00pm and our schedule continues as a mix of both live and online exhibitions. I hope to see more of you in person as the year progresses. All Together Now: Call for Entries with Jan Howard
After a year of challenges the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts is accepting entries to explore ideas related to community and address how Community is reflected in your photographic practice for an exhibition opening on September 16th. This Call is open to all styles and photographic processes and will be juried by Jan Howard, Curator of Prints, Drawings and Photographs at the RISD Museum.

The exhibition continues through August 11th, juried by David H. Wells This Exhibition is available online but best viewed in person. The gallery is open Thursday – Saturday Noon – 6:00pm,

A Fall of Rain: Kat Kiernan, Juror
Continuing our series of exhibitions exploring the general theme of moving forward, the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts will be hosting an opening reception for A Fall of Rain on Thursday August 19th. Juried by Kat Kiernan, Editor-in-Chief of the photography magazine Don’t Take Pictures the exhibition will be on view through September 10th.

Make Better Videos with your Smartphone: Storytelling with David H Wells
Video Workshop with David H Wells in Providence, September 25 – 26 This workshop with David H Wells is for people who want to learn to make better videos with their smartphone and create engaging short video stories on any subject. Techniques and strategies presented can be applied to filmmaking in any format, but in order to focus on strategies for better videos, and not the technology we will be working with smartphones.

In the Community:
Coastal Rhode Island is an invitational exhibition presenting a look at our local community from a group of Members who live and work there. This exhibition is on view at the McGrath Judicial Complex in Wakefield, RI. through September. We are pleased to have the opportunity to present this showcase of member work in the community in conjunction with the Supreme Court’s Art in the Courthouse exhibition series. The series was launched in 2002 with the goal of bringing original and vibrant art to the somber courthouse walls for the spring and summer months. There is a public reception scheduled for September 11th. The J. Howard McGrath Judicial Complex is located at 4800 Tower Hill Rd. Wakefield, R.I.
