Join our SlowPhoto Initiative, slow down and explore photography’s analog roots…
Track the sun and more with our long duration pinhole CanCameras. No experience required and while we are working with light sensitive materials, no chemistry or darkroom is required.
Be a part of our SlowPhoto initiative and take home one of our custom Pinhole CanCameras
SlowPhoto is one of the easiest and slowest ways to take a photograph, exposures generally range from 1-3 months, and often longer. These pinhole cameras take us back to the camera obscura (darkened room) and the origins of photography. These cameras are uniquely capable of recording the path of the sun across the sky. They also offer a number of other creative image capture possibilities, as exposures are built across a series of days, weeks, or even months. Capturing an entire year, or more is possible with our CanCameras.
Our custom made CanCameras come preloaded and ready to use. Mounting hardware and instructions for positioning and using these pinhole cameras are included. At the end of your desired exposure period, return the camera to the gallery, and we will process, scan and, if you are interested, add your photo to our SlowPhoto project archive. A digital download of your photograph will be made available to you.
These long duration Pinhole Cameras are available in the gallery for $10.00. The tall pint cans come preloaded with 5×7 Kodak photo paper. Standard 12oz cans come preloaded with 4×5 paper, and can also be used with 4×5 sheet film. The cameras are re-usable and reloads are available for $5 when you bring your CanCamera back to the gallery for processing.
If you are interested participating in our SlowPhoto initiative, fill out this submission form when you return your camera for processing, so that we can properly credit your photo and all the participating photographers – We are asking for you name and email address, along with the city and state where the photograph was taken. Optionally you are welcome to specify location “Mathewson Farm” for example and/or a title for us to publish with your photograph.
Submitted images will be published in an online showcase and may be used on social media, and or the center’s website to promote pinhole photography projects at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts. A selection of images will be published in a catalog of the images created with our CanCameras. Copyright for all photographs used remains with the individual photographers.
