Juror’s Statement: Yorgos Efthymiadis,
Jurying a group show is always a challenging task. It is also very rewarding. Being a fine art photographer myself, I immediately respond to projects rather than individual images. For me, a cohesive body of work has a story to tell, has a purpose, and requires commitment by the artist. As a consequence, I approached this juried show by selecting 11 photographers, and presenting multiple images of their work. In totality, the images resonated with me, my personal aesthetic and emotional state.
I have always been drawn to serene, man-made spaces which lack the human presence but are somehow also self-portraits of the artist. Gary Beeber’s photographs speak deeply about the passage of time, how things change, how we move on, and what we leave behind. Cate Wnek’s childhood images are fragile, yet alarming at the same time, revealing an etherial world that is on the verge of collapsing, an inevitable outcome of every coming of age storyline. Finally, there’s something surreal about Diana Cheren Nygren’s images which I can not pinpoint. I found myself prompted to create my own narrative, just by switching the order of the photographs.
I want to congratulate all the participating photographers and thank all the artists who submitted to the call. Finally, I want to thank David DeMelim for inviting me to curate the RICPA’s 2nd Annual Juried Members’ Exhibition, for which I’m profoundly grateful and honored.
