Traveling to South India with David Helfer Wells & the Art of One Bag Travel!
At its best, travel photography combines two passions, travel and photography. David H. Wells indulges those two passions in his work as an award-winning internationally traveled publication photographer. David brings to this presentation four decades of experience in photography around the globe. David is also a veteran photo educator who was named on of the “Best Workshop Instructor” in a Photo District News Reader Survey.
Making exceptional travel photographs requires skills in many different types of photography, from street photography to still-life work to portraits. In a typical day of travel, a photographer may shoot busy festivals, quiet buildings, open landscapes, or close-ups of nature. The best travel photographers are versatile in their skills and fluid in their process, using minimal gear to achieve a maximum of results. In this presentation, David will explore the important skills needed for good travel photography including:
- The traveling photographer’s camera and bag
- Being in the right place at the right time
- Varying the time of the day
- Understanding the light
- Portraying people
- Thoughts on tripods
- Varying lenses
David will explore these topics and more through his experience photographing in South India, his home-away-from-home. In his sixty-plus trips to India over the last two decades, the vast majority of his time was spent in the South, which is an altogether different India than the North. The food, the culture, the languages and even the light are different in the South, all of which are more interesting, and certainly more photogenic in his experience. David will also be highlighting his upcoming travel photography workshop, South India: Undiscovered, which will take place from February 4th to 19th of 2019. The journey will include some of the most compelling and underappreciated places in the Indian subcontinent.
This class can be the first step in what may be a lifelong journey for people who combine two of their favorite passions, travel, and photography.
