Roundtable Discussion moderated by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew
April 8th 6:00 – 8:30pm
Roundtable Starts at 7:00
Join us at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts for a moderated roundtable discussion with the photographers in our current exhibition, Outspoken: Expanded. The evening’s discussion will be moderated by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew. Annu will be asking the individual artists questions to facilitate their explanation of their work and process. Interaction from the audience will be encouraged.
Outspoken: Expanded is a curated exhibition composed of the work of nine women photographers, Nadine Boughton, Blake Fitch, Nancy Grace Horton, Marky Kauffmann, Tira Khan, Susan Lapides, Sunjoo Lee, Rania Matar and Emily Schiffer each presenting a series of images from an extended personal project. The exhibition, “Outspoken: Expanded” explores and challenges ideas related to being female. Individually, the photographers focus on a range of issues from adolescence to aging. Collectively, the show explores and provides insights into a broad spectrum of struggles encountered, reconciling society’s mixed messages and contradictory expectations.
The evenings presentation will be moderated by Annu Palakunnathu Matthew, a professor of art in the University of Rhode Island’s Department of Art and Art History. She is also currently the director of the URI Center for the Humanities. Matthew’s photo-based work draws from her experience of having lived between cultures and about being an immigrant in the USA.
Her work has been supported by fellowships from the Fulbright Program, John Gutmann Trust, Society for Photographic Education, MacColl Johnson fellowship fund, Rhode Island State Council of the Arts and the American Institute of Indian Studies.
