JP Terlizzi: Descendants

JP Terlizzi is presenting Descendants in a solo exhibition as an invited member artist. JP’s project was selected from work entered in our First Juried Members’ Exhibition where it caught the director’s attention.  The work was well received by visitors and members alike and he was invited to present Descendants in a more complete form. His solo exhibition in the Focus Gallery is produced in conjunction with our Second Annual Members’ Exhibition.

About the Work:

Descendants explores the origins of personal identity as it relates to the artist’s Italian ancestry and is an attempt to preserve the artist’s past, connecting and honoring the generations that came before. Curiosity surrounding how the past relates to the present, and how the bloodline passed down through generations represents the passage of time are central to JP’s presentation of family and familial bonds. Terlizzi utilizes a digital composite photograph of his ancestors and then incorporates his own blood specimens onto microscope slides, stitching them on the image to create new family portraits as an archive and memorial.

About: JP Terlizzi

Member JP Terlizzi is a New York City based visual storyteller who uses photography to explore themes of memory, relationship, and identity. JP currently lives in Manhattan. His career spans thirty plus years as creative director for a boutique agency specializing in retail design. His work has been exhibited widely across the United States and internationally including solo and juried shows at The Center for Fine Art Photography, Vicki Myhren Gallery at the University of Denver, Soho Photo Gallery in New York, The Griffin Museum, Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, Tilt Gallery, Panopticon Gallery, Candela Gallery, The Los Angeles Center of Photography, The Texas Photographic Society and The Berlin Foto Biennale, Berlin, Germany, among others. 
 
JP has received many honors and recognition including being named as a 2018 Photolucida Critical Mass Top 50 recipient for his series Descendants. The series was also selected as winner of the 2018 International Portfolio Competition and awarded a solo exhibition at the Soho Photo Gallery in Manhattan. In addition, he was a 2016 and 2015 Critical Mass Finalist with his series Mother and Hunter’s Calling.
 
His work can be found in both permanent and private collections and has been featured in PDN, Photo Emphasis, All About Photo, L’oeil de la Photographie, Abridged Magazine, The Photo Review, and Mono Chroma Magazine.
 
JP is currently represented by Foto Relevance Gallery in Houston, TX.
