Curious Conversations:
a Solo exhibition by Gail Samuelson
This solo exhibition will be presented in the Focus Gallery in tandem with our tth Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition. Gail was the recipient of this solo exhibition for her work featured in our 6th Annual Spotlight Member exhibition, as awarded by last year’s juror, Karen Haas. The award is an open invitation to exhibit new work, that may or may not be related to the work exhibited in the Spotlight Exhibition. This exhibition presents a new series a new body of work developed for this exhibition and produced using the photogravure process.

Artist Statement: Curious Conversations
Wandering small farms and neighborhood streets, I look for passing shadows, textured surfaces, and marks left behind. I’m drawn to how age and weather soften things. Hiding in plain sight, often-overlooked moments become my raw material, my reward for quietly paying attention.
I print my photographs as polymer photogravures — an intaglio printmaking process that presses ink into paper, producing rich blacks and a tactile feel. Printmaking requires a meditative focus and a physical connection, much like how I find my images. Both involve time, concentration, and care.
A shared sense of mood, form, and geometry in my images inspires me to display them as pairings, drawing attention to these curious conversations.

Biographical:
Gail Samuelson lives and photographs in a small rural town southwest of Boston and on Cape Cod. Surrounded by protected forest and wetlands, she is drawn to the changing light and how it affects her sense of home, the landscape, and family life. Trained to make photographs through a microscope, she now uses a camera to examine and capture details of everyday moments. Often closing in tight on her subjects, she distills and intensifies their form and meaning to unveil underlying emotional qualities. Gail’s photographs have been exhibited in museums and galleries, including the Danforth Museum, the Griffin Museum of Photography, Cassilhaus, PhotoPlace Gallery, the Davis Orton Gallery, and in The Yellow Rose Project. Her work is held in the permanent collections of Analysis Group, the Danforth Museum, and Cassilhaus in North Carolina. She previously served on the Board of Directors of the Griffin Museum of Photography.
