On the Street: Seen or Unseen
A juried look at Street Photography in 2025 with juror, Harvey Stein
On the Street is our first comprehensive exploration of contemporary street photography as juried by Harvey Stein. The work in this exhibition was selected from a call for entries to provide an updated look at current photographic practice, and by extension a look at life in 2025. The 128 photographs selected were drawn from a pool of over 800 images to create this exhibition and we would like to thank everyone who submitted work for consideration. In the end, the exhibition brings together the work of 79 photographers from 23 States, to be a part of our first in depth look at Street Photography. Collectively the exhibition presents a diverse cross section of what Street photography can be and various ways shooting on the street can be approached. We will be reviewing all entries at a later date as we look for photographers to feature in 2026 and beyond.

Sixth Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition
A different kind of juried member exhibition… juried by Karen Haas
Featuring work from Members:
Diane Bennett, Richard Cohen, Linda Hammett Ory, Joni Lohr, Gail Samuelson and Kaya Sanan
One of three annual member exhibitions here at the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts, this Spotlight series was conceived as a way to present ideas that carry across a group of images and to shine a light on our members. This juried exhibition provides the selected members the opportunity to present a larger selection of images than a typical juried show. As a viewer I hope you enjoy this expanded look at the members featured and the different ways they assembled a selection of images to present an idea beyond a single frame.
Delivery of invited Work: October 11th, Noon – 5:00pm
Opening Reception: October 16th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Exhibition: Thursday, October 16th thru Friday, November 14th
Unearthing an Insane Past
A Solo exhibition by Member, Martha Wakefield
This solo exhibition will be presented in the Focus Gallery in tandem with our 6th Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition. Martha was the recipient of this solo exhibition for her work featured in our 5th Annual Spotlight Member exhibition, as awarded by last year’s juror, Frances Jakubek. The award is an open invitation to exhibit new work, that may or may not be related to the work exhibited in the Spotlight Exhibition. Unearthing an Insane Past is the first showing of a new body of work developed in partnership with our Visual Storytelling workshop.
Artist Statement: Unearthing an Insane Past
Today the word asylum refers to a type of protection granted by one country to an individual persecuted by their own country. But an earlier meaning, long outdated, refers to the confinement of men, women and children who were considered mentally ill or “insane.”
This series explores the tragedy of a bygone era, the incarceration of men, woman and children who were deemed outside the norms of the times by society as well as impact on the staff who worked there. Having grown up in a family of medical professionals, I witnessed the challenges of tending to the sick and dying. This project is my way to unearth and share some of these stories as a tribute to both the inmates and the medical staff.
Presented in tandem with our 6th Annual Spotlight Member Exhibition
Opening Reception: October 16th, 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.
Exhibition: Thursday, October 16th thru Friday, November 14th
