Open Letter from David DeMelim
My primary goal for the RI Center for Photographic Arts is to create an active community to support contemporary voices in photography, through formal and informal educational programming. We have an active gallery schedule that includes a variety of PopUp and Student Exhibition opportunities in addition to the regular exhibitions. We have launched an online Gallery/Featured artist program and I hope you’ll take some time to view the work of our first featured artist, Ralph Mercer.
While the gallery program is one of the more visible programs at the center, it is not the most important. The programs that build a supportive community and facilitate an appreciation of photography are at the core of our mission. Fostering connections, facilitating growth, being a nexus for the free exchange of ideas and opportunities for individuals interested in learning or working in the Photographic Arts, these are the reasons the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts exists. I am looking for people interested in the continual development of programming that supports and provides a home for photography in Rhode Island and hope you will join me in supporting this new venture.
Existing PCPA memberships will be honored for all members still interested in participating in a photo center in Rhode Island. Membership information will be available on our new website at shortly. For updates and other information as it becomes available, send an email to gallery@riphotocenter.org
Our first exhibition, “Outspoken, Seven Women Photographers” curated by Marky Kauffmann opens March 15th as part of Gallery Night Providence. The exhibition runs through April 13th and I hope you have the chance to see this incredible work in person.
The future of photography in Rhode Island is bright and I look forward to your continued support as I begin again.
