Update from the director…
I hope you are all well and practicing safe strategies during these unprecedented times. While all of our regular in person programming is on hold we are still active and open in an expanded online format. We are providing regular updates to our current exhibitions on our website and sharing on social media @RIPhotoArts. We will continue to ramp up our programing online as we look further down the road and reimagine previously planned summer programing.
In a sad but expected move the Mayor of Providence has postponed PVDFest indefinitely. The June festival, Providence’s signature outdoor summer street party and performance art event typically provides a great variety of opportunities for shooting on the street. We have canceled all workshops and events planned around the festival and have processed refunds via PayPal for everyone who registered.
We had previously moved our planned feature exhibition of Rhode Island based photographers to next year and have extended our current gallery exhibitions. We continue to post features on the invited artists in Behind the Lens 2020 and have opened this feature of women in photography with the ongoing call for Women Behind the Lens Plus, that is being presented online in bi-weekly collections. You can see the first collection and read about the selected work at https://www.riphotocenter.org/behind-the-lens-plus-collection-1/ Entry is ongoing at https://www.riphotocenter.org/behind-the-lens-2020-plus/
A new Call for Entries: Unprecedented: Life in 2020
In place of our previously scheduled exhibition that should have opened tonight, we are launching our second online Open Call for work related to these unprecedented times. The call is free, open to everyone and for photographs taken during this interruption to regularly scheduled life. Email your entries to gallery@riphotocenter.org with Unprecedented: Life in 2020 as the subject. Please include a statement with your entry as well as a link to your website if you have one… Statements need only be location or why you though to take the picture, something to fix the image in time for a viewer who wasn’t present. We will be posting ongoing selections weekly online. We are in the process of planning several more focused calls in reaction to the “interesting” times we find ourselves in. So I encourage all of you to keep your camera handy and start documenting this new reality if you haven’t already.
In the meantime – Some productive things you may want to look into as we continue to explore the interiors of our homes in ways never previously imagined…
